Starting kindergarten or transitional kindergarten is an exciting adventure for children and their families.  It is a new beginning for developing the skills which will serve as a foundation for future learning.

Students who have a birth date on or before September 2nd are eligible to enroll in kindergarten.  Parents may opt to enroll their child in the transitional kindergarten if they feel it is a more developmentally appropriate placement.

What is Transitional Kindergarten

Transitional kindergarten is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate.  Pursuant to the law (Ed Code 48000[c]), a child is eligible for transitional kindergarten if a child will have his or her fifth birthday between September 2 and February 2.

Transitional Kindergarten is a program that:

  • serves as a bridge between Preschool and Kindergarten giving children more time for hands-on, interactive learning.
  • provides children the gift of time to learn skills that will help them build a strong foundation for success in elementary school.
  • teaches skills that were once only taught in First Grade, but are now taught in Kindergarten.
  • gives children the opportunity to spend time learning important social, emotional and academic skills that will help them succeed in Kindergarten and beyond.
  • provides young learners with a high-quality early education at no cost to parents, to ensure that they have an opportunity to continue learning.
  • helps children adjust to the school environment and develop strong learning skills.

Students enrolled in transitional kindergarten may be combined with a regular kindergarten class when there are not enough students to fill a separate class.  Parents who choose to enroll their child in the transitional kindergarten program do so with the understanding that their child will complete kindergarten the following year.

If your student turns 5 after February 2nd, then your student will be eligible to enroll in kindergarten for the 23/24 school year.
